Task Group on Grab Bars
Task Group on Grab Bars
January 19, 2026
The second meeting of the Grab Bar Task Group, chaired by Dustin Garnett with support from Vicki Komisar (Codes Canada), focused on grab bar requirements in residential occupancies. During review of the September 9, 2025 Record of Discussion, CHBA asked whether grab bar loading requirements were being addressed by working groups or by the main task group. Codes Canada clarified that research is underway, with results expected in 2027. CHBA noted that Canadian loading requirements (1.3 kN) are higher than those in the U.S., creating practical challenges for industry.
Codes Canada staff reviewed the TG mandate: to consider fall‑prevention measures for bathtubs, showers, and toilets in residential occupancies. For dwelling units, the mandate centres on ensuring spaces can accommodate future installation of grab bars; for hotels, motels, and dormitories, the mandate includes technical requirements for installed grab bars. Staff also presented the new adaptability requirements for grab bar backing included in the 2025 National Building Code.
Members discussed whether grab bars should be treated primarily as accessibility supports or as general safety devices. Opinions varied, and the chair emphasized there is a need to "disassociate" grab bars for accessibility since they benefit everyone. Codes Canada clarified that the group could develop different requirements for spaces intended for wheelchair accessibility, versus spaces intended for more general use.
Upcoming work will address developing prescriptive options for wall reinforcement for flip‑up/down grab bars and steel framing (via CCMC), and possible review of minimum wall reinforcement areas (per Accessibility Standards Canada’s CCR). Codes Canada is awaiting insights on the uptake of NBC 2025 reinforcement requirements by the provinces and territories. Greater clarity is expected within a year.
In response to CHBA’s request regarding warranty impacts for waterproofing membranes when grab bars are installed, a dedicated public meeting will be held with tile industry representatives.
A question arose on whether Code requirements for modular construction need to be updated since this form of construction is being used for Build Canada projects. CHBA noted that factory-built homes need to follow Code and therefore no additional requirements were necessary.
