Task Group on Indoor Air Quality in Dwellings
February 20, 2026
The first meeting of the Task Group on Indoor Air Quality in Dwellings (TG-IAQ-D) being chaired by Marina Freire-Gormaly, York University, and supported by Taous Achour with Codes Canada, included a review of the terms of reference, a review of the project plan, as well as Code Change Requests (CCRs) assigned to this task group.
The mandate of this TG is to:
- Review and assess ventilation system requirements in new and existing dwelling units to control and reduce the potential transmission of aerosol pathogens (infectious agents including bacteria, viruses and fungi that are suspended in the air within small particles that remain suspended for extended periods), and recommend code changes, where appropriate.
- Review requirements applicable to indoor air quality in new and existing dwelling units in response to increased airtightness and recommend code changes, where appropriate.
Codes Canada staff confirmed that item #2 comes from the list of 39 issues that was produced by the Joint Task Group on Potential Consequences of High Performing Homes in the previous Code cycle. This is one of the house-as-a-system related items that relates to the impact of the 2020 tiered energy-efficiency requirements that is being examined in the current cycle for the 2030 Codes.
During the review of the terms of reference, CHBA recommended that the review carried out on various ventilation standards including ANSI/ASHRAE 62.2 standard, Ventilation and Acceptable Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Residential Buildings during the previous Code cycle be used as information by this TG.
