Task Group on Radon Mitigation

Task Group on Radon Mitigation

July 22, 2025

The first meeting of the Task Group on Radon Mitigation (TG-Radon) was led by the Chair, Kyna Low, Stantec Consulting Ltd., along with presentations by Kevin Wu with Codes Canada who is the "lead Technical Advisor" for this Task Group.  The main purpose of the meeting was to orient new Task Group members and observers on the Code development process and the mandate for this TG.

This TG has been mandated to "mitigate radon ingress in Part 9 dwelling units in contact with the ground" and will need to review existing code change requests. CHBA does not have a seat on this Task Group and will therefore need to "observe" the meetings and wait for documents to be posted in public agenda packages.

CHBA asked whether the outstanding radon related concerns would be addressed by this new task group.  i.e. recommendation for the previous radon task group "to assess whether or not the current NBC radon ingress mitigation requirements are adequate in response to increasing ambitious air tightness requirements". CHBA also emphasized the need to update the radon diagrams in the 2020 Part 9 Illustrated Guide as a high priority, and recommended that outstanding work from the previous Code cycle should be addressed before new work gets underway.  Codes staff will report on developments on these two items at a future meeting.

A proposed work schedule was presented by staff and included a review of research carried out by the National Research Council (NRC) on the impact of active mitigation systems.  CHBA noted NRC's research report should be made available to observers such as CHBA at the same time as the Task Group members.
